Working Hard for to Renew Minnesota's Commitment to You!

Thanks, thanks, (whew) thanks

OK, it has been a week now and I think life is back to normal.  The signs are down, phone calls have been taken, stacks of paper have been filed and I actually fixed supper for Paul and I last night.

We had quite a run and I wouldn’t change a thing.  I am so very humbled by the support I received from so many people.  This was very hard work, and so many folks put their entire heart into it.

Thank you first to Jackie and Renee; the core of this campaign.  They believed in me before I believed in myself.  Thank you to my “Kitchen Cabinet”.  What a blast being on a committee where I enjoy all the members. Thank you to Senate District 35 who supported me in so many ways. They certainly contributed a great deal to this campaign.

How can I begin to thank Carissa from the coordinated campaign?  Not only did she help to make sense of our work, she was relentless in her pursuit of getting to every single voter either at the doors or by phone.

Thank you to my summer door-knockers, many of whom were pictured on this website.  We had the difficult task of making “cold-calls” on folks just wanting to enjoy their summer evenings, but we certainly met some amazing folks along the way and heard some amazing stories.

Thank you to everyone who was involved in the GOTV effort.  Our senate district is in the top 5 for voter turn-out.  That is something you all need to take credit for.

Thank you to my family for giving me the opportunity to try this. It is no easy task for a family to support a candidate, but my husband Paul and my boys Matt and Kevin were always there for me. I love them so very much.

We certainly seem to live in a “Sea of Red”, but we must all take heart that there are plenty of folks who share our vision. I also believe there are many more that just simply have to meet us in order to understand that we are share a common goal. We must never stop reaching out to everyone and listening to their story, because so often their story is our story. We are more alike than we are different. Thank you to everyone who shared their story. I am grateful and forever a better person for it.

The final stretch

I am running for House Seat 35a because we need someone in office who will not only work hard for Prior Lake and Shakopee families, but will have the political courage necessary to move Minnesota forward. I have eleven years of leadership experience on the Prior Lake Savage School Board. The challenges we faced from rapid growth and decreasing support from the state legislature has prepared me for the challenges that we now face in our communities and in Minnesota these coming years.

We don’t need an economist to tell us that for the first time in decades Minnesota’s economy is performing below the national average. We see it every day in the financial anxieties endured by our hard working families. I have spent the summer knocking on doors across our two communities and have reached out to over 4500 voters. Many of the voters who took the time to talk with me discussed stagnant wages, skyrocketing healthcare costs and on-going property tax increases that are making it too difficult to support their schools and their communities.

The last ten years has seen little or no state investment into the priorities we all share: good jobs, safe roads and quality schools. As a result our families have had to step up time and time again with their property taxes to maintain what we value. Now the hole of unmet needs is too deep and our current economic crisis will not allow us to use a bulldozer to fill it in. We can only hope to fill this hole one shovel full at a time.

To turn Minnesota around will take hard work and the political will to get the job done. I am the person to do this for Shakopee and Prior Lake families. I have learned that if you think there are two sides to an issue, you haven’t worked hard enough because there are probably five and that the best decisions are made when everyone is at the table. Please vote for me November 4th to turn the corner for our families and all families in Minnesota.

I want to thank Kathleen Klehr and others for arranging a candidate forum for Mike Beard and myself this past Thursday night.  I realize that we were bumped up against a debate that held just a bit more interest, so I also want to thank the folks who came out to listen to us.  The Scott County Historical Society, located in the Stans Museum on Fuller Street in Shakopee, has a new exhibit called:  From the Hill to the Valley, A Landscape In Politics.  It features items from past Scott County Elections and past National Elections.  It was very humbling to be surrounded by items representing those who have come before us to serve the public good.

Although I have participated in three other candidate forums as a school board member, I could still feel the nervousness and excitement of the moment.  I really enjoy discussing the issues but I have to admit that a two minute limit on issues as important as we are facing can be very challenging.  I hope to spend more time adding my thoughts on the issues to this website as we move closer to election day.

I continue to enjoy speaking with you at your homes and truly appreciate the emails of support.  We will be out door knocking in Prior Lake today with Congressional Candidate Steve Sarvi.

Great Schools = Great Communities

This past Sunday, Paul and I attended a gathering by a citizens group supporting the Prior Lake-Savage Area School District’s referenda on the ballot this November.

The Say Yes! committee spoke with nearly 150 folks who gave up their Sunday afternoon to learn how they could be ambassadors for our schools and our kids.

Prior Lake-Savage Area Schools are asking their voters to support kids by renewing the basic funding, opening Redtail Ridge and reducing class sizes while both operating conservatively and protecting property values.  After considering the economic difficulties that our schools and all of our families face, the School Board “sharpened their pencils” and are asking for support that is half of last fall’s request.
